Tai Kwun means Big Station in Chinese and originally housed the Central Police Station, courts and Victoria Prison first opening in 1841. Through the years the site was at the center of many events in Hong Kong’s history including the Japanese occupation during the Second World War and the 1967 riots.
Between 2004 and 2006 the site began to close before being redeveloped into a cultural and heritage center. Today it’s possible to tour the police station, courts and prison learning the history of each. The site also serves as an art gallery with exhibitions changing throughout the year.
A number of bars and restaurants line the courtyard making this a great location to sit out during warmer evenings.
Tai Kwun can be accessed by the main gates on Hollywood Road or via the Mid Levels Escalator and Walkway.
