A gift from France in 1886 to the people of the USA the main body of the statue is comprised of copper sheets beaten over a steel frame. The statue was built in France with the head being exhibited at the 1878 Paris World Fair. Including the pedestal, the statue measures 151 feet or 46 metres to the tip of the torch which is covered in gold.
