Originally an elevated rail line from the 1930’s which served the Meat Packing district, it fell into disuse in the 1980’s after demand declined. In 2009 the first section was repurposed as a city park before being extended again on 2014 to become a 1.5 mile green walkway connecting 12th Street to the Rail Yards at 34th Street.
At the southern end of the line is a balcony which overlooks where the original line continued but has since been replaced by apartments. The line ran through many buildings and today’s High Line follows that same course. It’s taking time to stop off at Chelsea Market at 15th Street or pause at the 10th Avenue window which offers prime views of the avenue below.
