Charles Bridge

Charles Bridge, Old Town, Prague

The Charles Bridge is the iconic bridge which links Prague Castle and the Old Town. Construction was started in 1357 by King Charles IV replacing an older bridge. Until 1841 this it remained as the only way to cross the river Vltava.

The bridge features statues along its course, the most famous of which depicts the crucifixion of Christ. It also features three towers to protect it. During the 1900’s the bridge saw heavy traffic including both horses and trams but today it is restricted to pedestrians. A UNESCO world heritage site, the bridge is busy with tourist traffic at peak times of the year.
