Battery Park is a large public park at the tip of Manhattan looking out across New York Harbor towards the Statue of Liberty. The park takes its name from an artillery battery that was installed in 1683 in a British fort after the area was taken over from Dutch settlers.
In 1855, the park was expanded to its current size using landfill from construction projects across Manhattan.Today the park is surrounded by the skyscrapers of southern Manhattan and serves as the embarcation point for boats to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. Inside the park you’ll find Castle Clinton, a former fort and the Seaglass Carousel, a fish theme fairground ride which remembers the aquarium which used to feature in the park.
